The experience
The tour departs from either Tokyo Station or Shinjuku and heads straight to Mt. Fuji's 5th Station, where you stand at 7,480 feet with panoramic views across the volcanic landscape. On clear days, the mountain dominates the horizon. On hazy ones, you explore the Komitake Shrine and the alpine terrain itself. From there, the route drops into Owakudani, a geothermal valley where steam vents and fumaroles cut through the rock. The Hakone Ropeway carries you across this volcanic floor, suspended above the steaming ground and the views that stretch toward the coast.
Lake Ashi comes next. You board a pirate-ship-themed pleasure cruise that crosses the water for roughly an hour. When visibility is good, Mt. Fuji reappears across the water, and the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine marks the far shore. The guide points out the geography and the shrine's significance as you move across the lake. An air-conditioned coach with free WiFi carries the group throughout the day, and a professional English-speaking guide narrates each stop. Multilingual translation headsets are available in 20 languages if you prefer to follow along in another tongue.
At the end of the day, you split by return option. Those choosing the Shinkansen disembark at Odawara Station and board the bullet train to Tokyo Station unaccompanied: the guide briefs you on the route before you leave the group. Those returning by coach ride back to Shinjuku, arriving around 7:30 p.m., though traffic can push that later. Lunch is available as an add-on. If you skip it, bring your own food, as dining options are sparse on the mountain and in the volcanic zone. Wear comfortable walking shoes and a light layer. The 5th Station sits well above Tokyo's temperature.

Is this one for you?Choose the Shinkansen return if you want to arrive back in central Tokyo by early evening and don't mind traveling the final leg alone. Pick the coach return if you prefer to stay with the group and end in Shinjuku. Departures from Tokyo Station suit travelers staying near the station. Shinjuku departures work better for those in the western part of the city.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I see Mt. Fuji on this tour if the weather is cloudy?
Mt. Fuji may not be visible on days with high humidity, heavy rain or fog. The tour runs regardless of weather unless the operator cancels it, and no refund is issued for poor visibility. If the road to the 5th Station becomes impassable due to weather or traffic, the guide redirects the group to the Fujisan World Heritage Center or lower stations on Mt. Fuji instead.
What happens if the Hakone Ropeway or pirate ship doesn't operate that day?
If either attraction closes due to weather or mechanical issues, the guide takes the group to an alternative site in the Hakone area: options include the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway, a Lake Ashi boat cruise, Lake Kawaguchi cruise, Mishima Skywalk, Odawara Castle, or one of several museums and shrines in the region. The tour continues and no refund is issued for the substitution.
Do I have to return to Tokyo the same way I departed?
No. You can depart from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku, and return by either coach or Shinkansen from Odawara Station, regardless of where you started. The return location cannot be changed on the day of the tour, so confirm your choice when you book. The coach returns to Shinjuku only, not to Tokyo Station.
Is lunch included, and what if I have allergies?
Lunch is an optional add-on. If you don't select it, bring your own meal since food options are limited at the stops. The operator can accommodate most allergy requests but does not provide gluten-free meals. Notify them of dietary needs at the time of booking.
