The Experience
The tour departs from either Shinjuku Station at 8:30 or Tokyo Station at 8:00, heading southwest into the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The drive takes you through the Hakone region, a resort area shaped by geothermal activity and mountain scenery. Along the way, the guide points out landmarks and stops for photos, so you're not just watching the landscape pass—you're building a sense of where you are before you arrive at the main stops.
Once in Hakone, you ride the ropeway up the mountainside. The cable car climbs over forested slopes and volcanic terrain, and on clear days Mt. Fuji appears in the distance. The ropeway deposits you at Owakudani, an active volcanic valley where steam vents rise from the ground and sulfur springs mark the raw geology beneath. You walk through the rugged terrain, see the steaming landscape up close, and understand why this valley is famous for its geothermal power. The ropeway ride back down gives you a second perspective of the same view from above.
Next comes the Lake Ashi cruise, a peaceful stretch across a crater lake ringed by forested hills. The water is calm, the air clears, and if conditions allow, Mt. Fuji appears again reflected on the surface. The cruise is the quietest part of the day—a chance to sit and absorb what you've seen. After the water, you visit Hakone Shrine and its famous floating torii gate, then finish at Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village built around eight crystalline ponds fed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt. The water is so clear you can see the bottom, and the village sells local snacks made from the mineral-rich spring water. The tour returns to Tokyo by early evening, completing a 10-hour arc through the region.

What is Owakudani and what will I see there?
Owakudani is an active volcanic valley in the Hakone region where steam vents and sulfur springs rise from the ground. You reach it by riding the Hakone Ropeway, and once there you walk through the rugged terrain to see the steaming landscape and experience the geothermal activity firsthand.
Is entry to the Hakone Ropeway included in the tour price?
Entry to the Hakone Ropeway is optional and paid separately at checkout. The same applies to the pirate ship cruise on Lake Ashi, which you can add if you prefer that experience over the standard lake crossing.
Can I see Mt. Fuji on this tour?
Mt. Fuji appears on clear days from the Hakone Ropeway and from Lake Ashi, where you may see it reflected on the water's surface. The visibility depends on weather conditions, but the tour is designed to give you multiple chances to spot it from different vantage points.
What is Oshino Hakkai and why is it the final stop?
Oshino Hakkai is a traditional village featuring eight crystalline ponds fed directly by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt. The water is remarkably clear and the village preserves thatched-roof houses and local culture; it serves as a quiet, scenic conclusion to the day before the return drive to Tokyo.
How long is the tour and when does it end?
The tour runs 10 hours total. Depending on your departure point—Shinjuku Station at 8:30 or Tokyo Station at 8:00—you return to Tokyo by early evening, giving you the rest of the day free.
Do I need to arrange my own lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. You'll have time at the stops to purchase food and local snacks, particularly at Oshino Hakkai where vendors sell treats made from the spring water.
