From there you move through the day in a loose sequence: Chureito Pagoda, a five-story shrine structure with nearly 400 steps leading up to views of Mount Fuji framed by old forest; Lake Kawaguchi, where you can walk the shore or take a speedboat ride if you want; Oishi Park, which is basically the place everyone photographs Mount Fuji from, with wildflowers and ice cream stands; Sengen Shrine, surrounded by dense trees; and finally Oshino Hakkai, an old village with eight colored ponds and a small museum of samurai weapons and farming tools. The mountain looks different from each one.

Lunch happens somewhere in the Lake Kawaguchi area — the driver knows the spots — and you're back in Tokyo by early evening. The whole day is about two hours of driving each way, which is the trade for not being on a crowded bus with thirty other people.
