You’ll roll fresh pasta by hand in chef Carolyn’s sunny Venetian kitchen, sip local wine as you learn family recipes, then share your homemade lunch on her terrace overlooking Campo Santa Margherita. Expect laughter, flour everywhere, and a new appreciation for Venice’s flavors—plus a few stories you’ll want to retell back home.
We were already elbow-deep in flour when Carolyn poured the first glass of Venetian wine. Her kitchen looks right onto Campo Santa Margherita — you can hear kids playing outside and the clink of coffee cups from the bar below. Carolyn’s accent is American but she’s lived here longer than I’ve been alive, and she moves around her kitchen like it’s a stage she knows by heart. She handed me a ball of dough and said, “Don’t worry, it’s supposed to be sticky.” I definitely worried anyway.
Making agnolotti was messier than I expected. The filling was some kind of fish from the lagoon — she explained which island it came from but honestly, I was too focused on not tearing my pasta to remember. My friend tried to pronounce “crème patisserie” in Italian and Carolyn just laughed and told us to keep stirring before it curdled. There was this smell — warm vanilla and something citrusy from the zest — that made me weirdly nostalgic for kitchens I’ve never actually been in.
Lunch ended up on her terrace, overlooking the square. It was April so we got lucky with sun, but there was still that sharpness in the air you only get near water. We ate what we’d made (surprisingly edible), drank more wine than planned, and watched locals argue over market prices down below. I didn’t expect to feel so at home in someone else’s city — or to leave thinking about how simple pasta can taste like a memory. If you’re looking for a Venice cooking class that feels real, this is it.
Your day includes all ingredients and equipment for hands-on cooking with chef Carolyn, plenty of Venetian wine and water throughout the lesson, plus a relaxed lunch featuring your own handmade pasta and dessert—served either inside or out on her terrace above Campo Santa Margherita if weather allows.
