You’ll sit side-by-side with celebrated Venetian artisan Massimiliano Caldarone in his quiet studio, learning real Murano lamp-work techniques. The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the light hit all those tiny glass fragments on Massimiliano’s worktable — like little colored candies scattered everywhere. We met him in his Venice studio, tucked down one of those winding alleys where you can hear people’s shoes echo off the stones. He greeted us with a quick smile and hands that looked strong but careful, and I felt weirdly nervous to touch anything at first. The air smelled faintly of melted sugar and something sharper — maybe the tools heating up? Anyway, he started showing us the lamp-work technique, which is apparently classic Murano style. I tried to repeat the Italian word for it and he grinned — said it better than most tourists (I think he was being nice).

Making glass art isn’t as easy as it looks when you watch someone who’s done it for years. My fingers fumbled with the rod, and there was this moment where I thought I’d just drop everything — but Massimiliano kept guiding me, step by step, not rushing at all. There’s this funny silence when you’re concentrating so hard, except for the soft hiss from the flame and his gentle corrections in Italian and English. At one point he laughed because my “masterpiece” looked more like a jellybean than anything elegant, but honestly I loved it. The colors swirl together in ways you don’t expect until they cool down.

By the end of the lesson, my hands were still shaky but proud — I got to take my little glass creation home (it sits on my desk now). He offered us a 10% discount if we wanted to buy any of his finished pieces too; some are wild shapes I can’t even describe. If you’re looking for a private lesson in Venice that feels personal and not touristy, this is it. Still think about that moment when my piece came out of the flame — kind of imperfect but totally mine.
