The Experience

You know that feeling when you step off the train in Treviso and the air smells different? Like grass after rain and a little yeast from somewhere. That’s how our Prosecco Hills day trip started. Giulia, our guide, waved her Beescover flyer at us — she had this easy way of making everyone relax right away. The van was cool inside (thank god), and as we left the city behind, I kept seeing these green slopes out the window that looked almost fake. But they’re not — Valdobbiadene is just like that.

The first winery was run by a family who’s apparently been doing this for generations. The cellar felt damp and old in a comforting way — stone walls, rows of bottles with dust thick enough to write your name on. We tried three kinds of DOCG Prosecco (I can’t pronounce half their names), paired with cheese and something salty I still can’t identify but liked anyway. Our host explained how each bottle is made — there was this moment where he held up a glass to the light and talked about “perlage.” I pretended to know what that meant. The cheese tasted sharper than what I get at home, maybe it’s just fresher here.

Driving through the UNESCO hills between stops, Giulia told stories about harvest traditions and pointed out tiny chapels tucked into vines. She laughed when I asked if people ever get tired of these views — “Never,” she said, shaking her head. In Conegliano we had free time; I wandered up to the castle but got distracted by a bakery selling almond pastries. The main square was full of locals talking with their hands (so much gesturing!) and sipping espresso even though it was almost noon.

The second winery sat among Cartizze vineyards — apparently some of the most prized land for Prosecco DOCG. We strolled between rows while our host explained why these grapes are special (something about wind and soil). Four more tastings here, plus local snacks that tasted like someone’s grandmother made them that morning. By then my notes were getting fuzzy but in a good way. Looking back, there’s this one view from the vineyard where you see nothing but rolling green hills and it just stays with you.
