The experience

If you have a free evening in Venice and want to eat something you won't find in a restaurant, this is where Massimo takes you. He's the last of his family's sailors, a rare thing now in Italy, and he cooks the dinner a proud Venetian fisherman would eat at home: sarde in saor, the ancient sardine recipe that has been prepared in this region for centuries; tender cuttlefish and polenta; grilled prawns on spicy pumpkin mousse; mackerel baked in foil with leek. The meal opens with a Spritz and Venetian chichetti, moves through caponata and stuffed peppers, and lands on handmade pasta with whatever the sea delivered that day. It's not a performance of tradition. It's the thing itself, the way the Veneto tastes when you trace it from the mountains (where the truffles and artisanal cheeses come from) down to the lagoon where fishermen still work.

The evening runs about two and a half hours around a shared table with other foodies, and the wine flows: red, white, aperitif or sparkling, your choice. Massimo talks you through the life and heritage of Venetian sailors while you eat, the kind of knowledge that comes from a family that has lived it. Dessert is tiramisù or panna cotta. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, tell the operator when you book and the menu adapts. The experience stays the same.

The guide speaks English or Italian. You'll need to let them know about any food restrictions ahead of time so they can prepare. On certain dates, visitors staying outside Venice who are coming for the day will owe a €5 city access fee. Check the operator's link for which dates apply and whether you're exempt.

Is this one for you?The evening is unhurried (two and a half hours around the table), so it works best if you have a free night and are willing to eat at the pace Massimo sets, which is the pace of someone who knows these flavors deserve time.
