The experience

You leave your Chennai hotel at 4am for the airport, fly to Delhi at 6:20am, then drive three hours by expressway to Agra. A private guide meets you there and takes you straight to the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife, Queen Mumtaz Mahal. Instead of walking the grounds with thousands of others, you ride a golf cart to and from the monument, which cuts through the crowds and saves your legs for the rest of the day.

After lunch at a local restaurant (your own cost), you visit Agra Fort, another UNESCO site built by Emperor Akbar in 1565 from red sandstone. The fort's courtyards, mosques and private chambers show a blend of Hindu and Central Asian architecture that tells the story of the Mughal Empire. If time allows, your guide can take you to Agra's handicraft markets, where artisans sell marble inlay work, leatherware, brassware and embroidered pieces descended from the Mughal tradition.

You drive back to Delhi airport for your evening flight to Chennai, arriving around 11pm. Your driver picks you up from the airport and drops you at your hotel.
