The Experience

Hands pressed together in greeting, our guide Ravi met us right at the hotel lobby in Chennai — I was still fumbling with my scarf, hoping I’d wrapped it right for temple dress code. There was this faint smell of jasmine from roadside stalls — not overpowering, just enough to remind you you’re somewhere new.

First stop: Kailasanathar Temple. It’s old — like 7th-century-old — and somehow still feels alive. The sandstone felt warm under my palm. Ravi showed us tiny carvings tucked into corners, some half-worn by centuries of hands or rain. He told stories about Pallava kings that made me wish I’d paid more attention in history class. At Ekambareswarar Temple, it was quieter than I expected for such a big place; there’s a 3,500-year-old mango tree inside (Ravi swears it’s true), and people were tying little bits of cloth to its branches for wishes. I tried to ask one woman what she wished for but got only a shy smile and a gesture toward her heart.

The surprise highlight? Visiting a silk saree weaver’s home. We ducked into this cool room where threads hung everywhere — gold and deep red mostly — and the loom clacked steadily while his wife poured us sweet chai in steel cups. Watching him work was almost hypnotic; his fingers moved so fast they blurred. He let me try the shuttle once (I totally messed up the pattern), which made everyone laugh, including his daughter who peeked around the doorframe every few minutes. There’s something about seeing those famous Kanchipuram silk sarees being made right in front of you that makes them feel less like souvenirs and more like stories you can wear.

Lunch was on banana leaves at a local spot Ravi picked — spicy sambar, rice so fluffy it barely stayed on my fingers, crispy papadum that crumbled if you looked at it too hard. I still think about that meal sometimes when I smell curry leaves at home. The ride back to Chennai felt quieter; maybe it was just tiredness or maybe just letting everything sink in as dusk settled outside the car window.
