The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Chennai hotel and a drive to Mahabalipuram, a port city that flourished under the Pallavas in the 7th and 8th centuries. Your guide meets you there and takes you first to the Shore Temple, one of the oldest granite stone temples in Southern Asia, built by King Raja Simha in the early 8th century. It overlooks the Bay of Bengal and stands as a landmark in India's architectural history. From there the itinerary moves through the rock-cut caves—one holds two bas-reliefs, Lord Vishnu sleeping on a serpent coil and Goddess Durga fighting the demon Mahishasura on a lion—and then to the lighthouse, built in 640 and among the world's oldest.
The Panch Rathas (five chariots) are monolith structures carved from single stones, each dedicated to a character from the Mahabharata epic: Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. An elephant sculpture stands beside the Nakul-Sahadeva ratha. You also see the Ganesh Ratha, a chariot built in the 7th century by King Mahendravarman I and carved with 18 inscriptions in ancient grantha and nagari scripts. The Trimurti Cave, dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, shows the Pallavas' architectural style with fine elephant carvings throughout.
Two stops stand out for their scale. Krishna's Butterball is a granite boulder balanced on a stony slope that has not moved in over a thousand years, defying what gravity should allow. Arjuna's Penance is a bas-relief 100 feet long and 45 feet tall, depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and considered one of India's finest pieces of ancient art. The main narrative shows Arjuna performing severe austerities to obtain Lord Shiva's weapon. After these monuments, lunch is served at Hotel Mamalla Bhavan before the return drive to Chennai.
