The experience
The day starts with a 3-hour drive south from Chennai to Pondicherry, arriving at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where the spiritual philosopher and poet made his home from 1910 until his death in 1950. From there you move to the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, a 500-year-old shrine dedicated to Ganesha that draws Hindu devotees and travelers across the country. A stop at the Sri Aurobindo Paper Factory shows how hand-made paper is produced from 100% cotton rag pulp using silk screen printing and marbling techniques developed over 50 years.
The route then leads to Auroville, a radical experiment in communal living where thousands of residents from across the world have renounced their nationalities to live as global citizens. The centerpiece is the Matrimandir, a giant dome built for silent meditation, and the tour includes time to observe the sustainable practices woven through daily life there. After lunch, you head to Mahabalipuram, where the Pancha Rathas (five monolithic temples carved from single rocks in the 7th century), each honor a character from the Mahabharata epic. Arjuna's Penance, a bas-relief 100 feet long and 45 feet tall, depicts scenes from the same epic and ranks among India's most significant ancient artworks. Krishna's Butterball, a massive granite boulder balanced on a slope for over a thousand years, defies gravity in a way that still puzzles visitors. The Shore Temple, built in the early 8th century by King Raja Simha, overlooks the Bay of Bengal and is the last surviving structure of seven temples that once stood as a landmark for seafarers. Marco Polo called them the seven pagodas.

Top questions
What is the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and why is it significant to Pondicherry?
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is the home and spiritual center of Sri Aurobindo, a 20th-century seer, poet and philosopher who settled in Pondicherry in 1910 and lived there until his death in 1950. His vision and ideals continue to draw visitors from around the world, making it one of the most important spiritual landmarks in the city.
How old is the Manakula Vinayagar Temple and who is it dedicated to?
The Manakula Vinayagar Temple is more than 500 years old and is dedicated to Ganesha, the Hindu lord. Despite Pondicherry's many churches, this temple remains highly revered among Hindu devotees and attracts travelers from across India.
What makes Auroville different from other communities?
Auroville was founded on the vision of creating a place where people from all nations could live together as global citizens under one authority: the pursuit of supreme truth. Residents have renounced their nationalities, and the community practices sustainable living across all aspects of daily life.
What are the Pancha Rathas and what do they represent?
The Pancha Rathas are five monolithic temples carved from single rocks during the 7th century by the Pallavas. Each ratha, or chariot, is dedicated to one of the lead characters from the Mahabharata epic: Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. An elephant sculpture stands next to the Nakul-Sahadeva ratha, and its rear bears an uncanny resemblance to the chariot itself.
Why is the Shore Temple considered a landmark in Indian architecture?
The Shore Temple was built in the early 8th century by King Raja Simha and overlooks the Bay of Bengal. It is the last surviving structure of seven temples that once stood as a beacon for seafarers during the Pallava kingdom's reign, when Mahabalipuram was the main port. Marco Polo referred to these temples as the seven pagodas.
What is Krishna's Butterball and why is it remarkable?
Krishna's Butterball is a massive granite boulder balanced on a stony slope that appears to defy the laws of gravity. Despite its precarious position, it has not moved an inch for more than a thousand years, making it one of Mahabalipuram's most curious natural monuments.
