The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Chennai, then moves through the city's main cultural sites. Marina Beach stretches 3 kilometers along the shore, where you'll walk past cricket matches, kite flyers, fish markets and families. The Kapaleeshwar Temple in Mylapore, built in the 7th century in Dravidian style, sits in a neighborhood whose history traces back to Roman times when it traded pepper and fine cloth for gold. Your guide will walk you through the temple rituals and explain what happens inside. Nearby, the San Thome Basilica stands as one of only three churches in the world built on an apostle's tomb. The others are St. Peter's in the Vatican and Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Fort St. George, built by the East India Company in 1644, holds St. Mary's Church, India's oldest Anglican church, and a museum of colonial relics that traces how a trading company became a ruling power. After lunch at a local restaurant, you drive an hour along the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram, the ancient seaport and second capital of the Pallava Kings in the 5th century. The Pancharathas (five monolithic temples carved from single rocks in the 7th century) each honor a character from the Mahabharata epic, with an elephant sculpture beside the Nakul-Sahadeva ratha that mirrors the chariot's shape when viewed from behind. Arjuna's Penance, a bas-relief 100 feet long and 45 feet tall, depicts scenes from the Mahabharata and ranks among India's greatest ancient artworks.
The Shore Temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and is the last surviving structure of seven temples that once stood here: Marco Polo called them the seven pagodas. Built in the early 8th century by King Raja Simha, it marks the final flowering of Pallava architecture. You'll also see Krishna's Butterball, a granite boulder perched on a slope for over a thousand years without moving, and a shell collection of 40,000 items gathered over 33 years. A memorial to Swami Vivekananda, the philosopher whose 1893 speeches at the World's Parliament of Religions brought Indian wisdom to the West, completes the stops before the return to Chennai.
