The experience
The tour starts with morning pickup from your Chennai hotel or airport, then heads south to Mahabalipuram, a 7th-century port city built by the Pallava dynasty about 60 kilometers away. The town sits on the coast and has been a stone-carving center for centuries, with temples, bas-reliefs and carved rock overhangs dating from the 7th to 9th centuries. You'll visit the Pancharathas (five monolithic temples carved in the 7th century, each dedicated to a character from the Mahabharata epic), and see the sculpture of an elephant carved next to one of them. The tour then moves to Arjuna's Penance, a 100-foot-long and 45-foot-tall bas-relief depicting scenes from the Mahabharata, considered one of India's finest pieces of ancient art.
Two more stops round out the Mahabalipuram section: Krishna's Butterball, a massive granite boulder balanced on a slope that has remained unmoved for over a thousand years, and the Shore Temple, built in the early 8th century by King Raja Simha. The temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and was once part of a group of seven structures that served as beacons for seafarers. Marco Polo referred to them as the seven pagodas. After Mahabalipuram, you're transferred to Pondicherry for the night, staying in a 3-star or 4-star hotel.
Day two in Pondicherry begins at the Aurobindo Ashram, the memorial of Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, where you learn about his life, philosophy and revolutionary ideas. A heritage walk through the French quarter shows the European classical architecture and wide boulevards that define the old town: a blend of French and Tamil styles that gives Pondicherry its distinct character. You'll visit a hand-paper factory that has operated for 50 years, making paper from 100% cotton rag pulp using silk-screen printing and marbling techniques. After lunch, a walk along the Bay of Bengal promenade is followed by a visit to Auroville, an experimental community founded on the idea of a place where people from across the world live as global citizens. You'll see how residents practice sustainable living and can view the Matri Mandir, a giant dome for silent meditation (interior meditation requires advance permission obtained in person). Private transport, a cultural guide fluent in English or French, and all entry tickets are included throughout.

What is the Pancharathas and why does it matter in Mahabalipuram?
The Pancharathas are five monolithic temples carved in the 7th century, each dedicated to a character from the Mahabharata epic: Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. They are rock-cut structures built by the Pallavas, and the chariot of Nakul-Sahadeva is carved next to a sculpture of an elephant whose rear resembles the chariot's shape.
How long does the Mahabalipuram portion of the tour take?
Mahabalipuram itself takes approximately 1.5 hours to visit, though the full day includes travel time from Chennai and the transfer to Pondicherry afterward.
What is Auroville and what will I see there?
Auroville is an experimental global community founded on the vision of a place where people from across the world live as citizens without national boundaries, united by a commitment to truth and sustainable living. On a day visit you can see the Matri Mandir, a giant dome for silent meditation, from outside. Interior meditation requires permission obtained in person one day in advance.
What does the hand-paper factory visit involve?
The Sri Aurobindo Paper Factory, operating for 50 years, makes paper from 100% cotton rag pulp. The visit shows you how cotton rags are processed and then decorated using silk-screen printing and marbling techniques.
