The Experience

The first thing that hit me in Agra wasn’t the sight of the Taj Mahal (though, yeah, it’s hard to miss) — it was the way the morning air tasted slightly sweet near the river. Our driver picked us up from our hotel just after sunrise. I was still half-asleep, but our guide Rahul was already grinning, waving a bottle of water at me like he’d known me for years. He said we’d start with the Taj before it got too crowded — smart move. The marble felt cool under my hands. I tried tracing one of those inlaid flowers with my finger, but honestly, I kept getting distracted by how everyone around me went quiet without even meaning to.

Afterwards, Rahul led us through old city lanes toward Agra Fort. The traffic here is its own kind of music — horns, laughter, a cow or two just standing in the middle of things. Inside the fort it was all echoing footsteps and thick red walls that seemed to hold onto the heat. Rahul pointed out a tiny window where Shah Jahan supposedly watched the Taj Mahal across the river. I didn’t expect much from the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah (Rahul called it “Baby Taj”), but actually… it was peaceful there. No crowds, just birds hopping along white stone railings and a faint scent of jasmine from a nearby garden. I sat for a minute on one of those steps and let my brain catch up with everything we’d seen. Later, as we drove back past chai stalls and kids playing cricket in dusty lots, Rahul asked if I’d ever come back to Agra. Maybe someday — there’s something about this place that sticks to you.
