The experience

The tour starts with a 6 a.m. pickup at your Agra hotel, or at the train or bus station if that's where you're arriving. Your guide and driver meet you there and drive straight to the Taj Mahal for sunrise, when the light hits the marble and the crowds are still thin. The guide walks inside with you, explains the monument's history and the story behind it, and helps you frame shots before the site fills up. After that, you head back to your hotel for breakfast.

The rest of the day unfolds at a pace you set with your guide. You visit Agra Fort, the walled palace complex where Mughal emperors lived, and from its walls you get a view of the Taj Mahal from the other side: a perspective most visitors miss. If you booked the full day, you stop for lunch (your choice of restaurant), then drive to the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah, built before the Taj Mahal and often called the Mini Jewellery Box for its intricate inlay work. The final stop is Mehtab Bagh, a garden on the far bank of the Yamuna River where you sit and watch the Taj Mahal at sunset from across the water.

The car is air-conditioned and sized to your group: a sedan for one or two people, an SUV for three to five, a minibus for six to ten. Skip-the-line entry is included at every monument, which means your guide takes you past the ticket queues and straight inside. The guide speaks English, Spanish, French, German or one of five other languages, so you're not following a translation or missing details.
