The Experience

"You won't believe how quiet it is before sunrise," our guide said as we stepped out of the car near the Taj Mahal. I was still shaking off sleep—5:45 am isn’t my finest hour—but the air felt softer than I expected, almost cool on my arms. We walked through nearly empty gates (skip-the-line really means something here), and suddenly there it was: the marble glowing faintly pink in the first light. I’m not sure what I thought I’d feel, but standing there with just a handful of other early risers and our guide quietly telling stories about Shah Jahan... yeah, it got to me.

Afterwards we went back for breakfast—Indian chai tastes different when you’re half-awake and full of wonder—and then drove over to Agra Fort. Our guide knew every nook and had this way of making old stones sound alive. There’s a spot where you can see the Taj Mahal across the river; he pointed it out and told us how the king used to gaze at it from his window.
