The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise, and that timing is the whole point. You arrive when crowds are still thin and the white marble catches the softest light. The guide handles the skip-the-line entry so you walk straight through. Spend 2 to 3 hours on the grounds: the main mausoleum where Shah Jahan commissioned the complex in 1631 as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the mosque, the guesthouse, and the gardens. Then it's on to Agra Fort, the red sandstone fortress built by Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573 on the Yamuna River. This was the main seat of Mughal power until 1638, and later became the prison where Shah Jahan watched the Taj Mahal from the Musamman Burj until his death. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, and the guide walks you through the white marble palaces, mosques, and halls that successors like Jahangir and Shah Jahan added to Akbar's original structure.
