The Experience

The car pulled up in Delhi just as the city was waking up—honking already starting, chai stalls steaming. Our driver grinned and handed me a cold bottle of water (thank god), then we set off for Agra. Three hours on the expressway went by in a blur of dusty fields and snack stops. I half-dozed until our guide in Agra waved us down with this huge smile—he’d clearly done this a hundred times but still seemed excited. The Taj Mahal looked almost unreal in the morning haze; I kept squinting like it might disappear if I stared too hard. There was this faint scent of wet stone and flowers near the entrance—maybe jasmine?—and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside.

After that we wandered over to Agra Fort. It’s massive—red sandstone everywhere, echoing footsteps in the courtyards. Our guide told stories about Mughal emperors with all these little details (he called one “the original drama king,” which cracked me up). Lunch was at some local spot he picked—spicy dal, naan straight from the tandoor, my fingers still smelled smoky after. Then came the long drive to Jaipur. We passed camels on the road at one point; I tried to get a photo but only caught blur and dust.

Jaipur felt different right away—pink buildings glowing under early sun when we checked out Hawa Mahal for photos. Next stop was Amber Fort: climbing those old steps made my knees creak but I forgot about it once we got to the top. The view over hills dotted with monkeys is something I still think about sometimes. Our guide pointed out tiny details in palace carvings that I would’ve missed (and he laughed when I mispronounced “Jantar Mantar”—I’m pretty sure I butchered it). City Palace was busy but beautiful; there were school kids on a field trip waving at us like we were celebrities or something.

The ride back to Delhi felt quieter—I just watched fields roll by out the window, tired but sort of content. Not everything went smoothly (traffic jams are just part of life here), but it made every moment feel more real somehow.
