The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound of our train—the Gatimaan Express—pulling out of Delhi just after sunrise. There’s this low hum and a sort of metallic rattle that makes you realize how quickly you’re leaving one world for another. Our driver had picked us up right on time (even though I was still half asleep), and by 8:00 we were already gliding past fields and little towns I couldn’t name. We went straight to the Taj Mahal while it was still cool enough that the marble felt almost cold under your hands. Amit explained how Shah Jahan built it for Mumtaz Mahal, but what really stuck with me was how he described the changing colors in the stone as the sun moved—he called it “the Taj’s moods.” There were crowds but somehow it didn’t matter; everyone seemed hushed for a second when they saw it up close. I tried taking photos but none of them really captured that first glimpse through the archway.

Afterwards we headed to Agra Fort—red sandstone everywhere and echoes bouncing off those old walls. The fort is massive; Amit pointed out where emperors used to watch elephants fight (I didn’t expect that detail). By then I was hungry, so lunch at this fancy hotel felt like a small miracle—buffet style, lots of curries and naan, and something sweet I still can’t pronounce (or forget). The AC inside was almost too cold after being outside all morning.

The afternoon blurred a bit—maybe it was the heat or just all those stories—but we visited Itimad-ud-Daulah (the “Baby Taj”) which looked delicate compared to its big sister. There were birds everywhere in Mehtab Bagh when we stopped for a last look across the river at the Taj Mahal. That view at sunset is quieter than you’d think; even with people around, there’s this hush as if everyone’s holding their breath for a second longer before heading back.
