The Experience

We stepped out of the car just as the city was barely waking up—Delhi’s air still cool and a bit smoky. Our driver handed us over to the chaos of Nizammuddin station, but he didn’t leave until we’d found our seats on the Gatimaan Express. Our guide was waiting right outside the coach with my name scribbled on a sign (he joked about my handwriting later). First stop: Taj Mahal. It’s strange how quiet it feels there, even with all the people. The marble under my hand was cool and smooth, almost unreal. Our guide told stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz—somehow sadder when you’re standing right in front of it. I tried to take photos but honestly just ended up staring most of the time.

Afterward we drove over to Agra Fort—red stone everywhere, sunlight bouncing off those old walls. The afternoon felt slower. We stopped at Itimad-Ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s smaller but full of delicate patterns; our guide called it a jewel box, which fits. Last stop was Mehtab Bagh across the river—if you’ve got time, go for sunset. The light turns everything gold and you get this peaceful view back at the Taj Mahal without crowds pressing in around you. I still think about that quiet moment by the water sometimes.
