The Experience

I barely had time to finish my tea before our driver showed up outside the Delhi hotel—7am sharp, but he was already waving like we were old friends. The city hadn’t really woken up yet; just that faint smell of street chai and a few sleepy horns. He helped me find my seat on the Gatimaan Express (honestly, I’d have been lost without him), and suddenly we were gliding out of Delhi. The train was quieter than I expected—just the soft clink of breakfast trays and people chatting in Hindi. I watched the fields blur past and tried not to spill dal on my shirt. Didn’t quite succeed.

In Agra, our guide Raj met us right on the platform with a sign—big grin, easy laugh. He whisked us straight to the Taj Mahal before most of the crowds arrived. I thought I’d be jaded seeing it after all those photos, but standing there in front of that marble, it’s weirdly silent except for birds and a few quiet voices. Raj told stories about Shahjahan and Mumtaz that made it feel less like a postcard and more like something sad and real. We wandered through arches while he pointed out little details—the way light hits the inlay work is wild if you look close.

Lunch was at this place with cold mango lassi and too many curries—I definitely overdid it on naan. After that came Agra Fort, which honestly surprised me; I didn’t expect those red walls to feel so massive or for there to be so many hidden corners. Raj kept finding shady spots for us when the sun got pushy. There’s this one window where you can see back toward the Taj Mahal across the river—I stood there longer than I meant to.

The ride back on the Gatimaan Express felt slower somehow (maybe because I was full and tired), but our driver was waiting again in Delhi like clockwork. It’s funny how quickly you get used to being looked after—by evening, all that marble and noise felt far away but sort of stuck with me anyway.
