The experience

The tour starts from your hotel in Bayeux and moves through the landing zones in sequence, beginning at Juno Beach where Canadian forces of the 3rd Infantry Division came ashore against heavily fortified German defences. Your guide walks you through the planning and preparations that went into the largest military operation in history, the units involved and their objectives. At Gold Beach, you'll stand where the 50th Infantry Division broke through from an exposed shoreline and learn the story of Stanley Hollis, who earned the only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day. Free time at each site lets you take photos, use restrooms or grab a coffee.

The route includes Mulberry Harbour, the artificial port that became the Allies' most important supply point in North-West Europe until December 1944, and Bayeux War Cemetery, where 6,452 soldiers of multiple nationalities, including German, are buried. At Pointe du Hoc, you'll walk among the preserved German bunkers and hundreds of bomb craters, then climb the 100-foot cliffs that US Army Rangers assaulted to destroy the enemy gun battery. The tour ends at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, overlooking Omaha Beach, where 9,380 American servicemen and women are laid to rest across more than 170 acres. You'll have time for reflection here and may witness the lowering of the flags.

Throughout the day, your guide shares stories of the men and women who fought to free Europe from Nazi occupation. The vehicle is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. The tour suits all fitness levels, though it involves standing and walking at multiple outdoor sites over eight to nine hours. A live guide in English or Dutch is included with pickup from your hotel.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Dutch.

What exactly is Mulberry Harbour and why does it matter to the D-Day story?

Mulberry Harbour was an artificial port the Allies built off the Normandy coast after D-Day. It became the most important supply point for the entire North-West European campaign until December 1944, allowing the Allies to land troops and equipment without capturing a major port first: a critical advantage that shaped the entire invasion strategy.

Can I walk into the German bunkers at Pointe du Hoc?

Yes. Pointe du Hoc is preserved as a battlefield, and you can enter the many German bunkers still standing on the site. You'll also see the hundreds of bomb craters and the 100-foot cliffs the US Army Rangers scaled to assault the gun battery positioned there.

What happened at Omaha Beach that made it different from the other landing zones?

Omaha Beach saw the heaviest casualties of D-Day. The beach was more exposed and the German defences stronger than expected. Many things went wrong during the landing. Your guide explains the units involved, the obstacles they faced and how leadership and determination turned the situation around despite the losses.

How much time do I get at each site to look around?

The tour includes free time at each location so you can take photos, use restrooms or grab a coffee. The full tour runs eight to nine hours from pickup, covering six major sites plus travel between them.

Is this tour suitable for children?

The tour is not suitable for children under eight. Older children can join, though the day involves standing and walking at outdoor sites and focuses on military history and casualties, which may not suit younger visitors.
