The Experience
The day starts at your hotel and moves through the American sectors of the Normandy landings in sequence. At Omaha Beach, the guide walks you through what happened on June 6th, 1944, then gives you around 15 minutes to stand on the sand itself—the actual ground where American forces came ashore, depending on the tide. From there, the Normandy American Cemetery sits on a bluff overlooking the channel; the guide explains the site's history and why it stands where it does, then leaves you 45 minutes to walk the rows on your own.
Pointe du Hoc comes next: the guide explains how American Rangers scaled the cliffs to knock out German gun positions, and you get time to explore the bunkers and the scarred landscape they left behind. Then the route turns inland to Sainte-Mère-Église, where the 82nd Airborne dropped on D-Day. You have an hour and a half here—enough for lunch at a local café or a full visit to the Airborne Museum, which puts you inside a C-47 transport plane and a glider with sound and light, walking through the invasion from the English preparations through the Normandy battles. The museum sits at the heart of the village, facing the church where paratrooper John Steele famously hung from the bell tower by his chute.
The final stops are Utah Beach, where the 4th Infantry Division landed, and Angoville-au-Plain, a small village 5 miles from Carentan where American and German paratroopers fought after dropping nearby. The guide tells the story of two Airborne medics, Kenneth Moore and Robert Wright, who showed both courage and humanity in the desperate fighting there. The whole day runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off, moving in an air-conditioned minivan with a professional guide who speaks English.
