The Experience

The tour departs on schedule from Bayeux, so arriving early matters—if you're late, you'll need to catch up by taxi at your own cost. Once aboard, the guide takes you to Omaha Beach first, where you get a detailed account of the American landings on June 6th, 1944, then around 15 minutes to walk the sand itself (tidal conditions permitting) where the troops came ashore. From there, the American Cemetery and Memorial opens up: the guide explains when it was built, why it sits where it does, and tells stories of the men and women buried there, leaving you roughly 45 minutes to walk the grounds on your own.

Pointe du Hoc comes next—the clifftop position where American Rangers had to scale the bluffs to knock out German long-range guns. The guide walks through what that assault meant, then gives you time to explore the terrain and monuments yourself. The tour also passes through the bocage, the dense hedgerow countryside the Germans used for defense, and your guide explains how the Allies broke through it. You'll stop at Utah Beach to see the monuments there and learn about the 4th Infantry Division's role, and you'll visit Sainte-Mère-Église, the Norman village where the 82nd Airborne paratroopers dropped—the same town made famous by the film The Longest Day, where paratrooper John Steele got caught on the church steeple during the drop.

Entry to the Airborne Museum is included in the tour price. The guide gives you enough time to move through it at your own pace, and the exhibits deepen what you've seen on the ground—the paratroop operations, the equipment, the scale of the airborne drop. The whole day runs about eight and a half hours, and you travel in an air-conditioned minivan with no more than 20 people on board.
