The experience

What does it take to understand how the invasion actually unfolded? This tour moves through the five beaches where British and Canadian forces landed, starting at Longues-sur-Mer where a German gun battery threatened both Omaha and Gold Beach, then following the route through Gold Beach itself, where you can still see the remains of Port Winston, the artificial harbor the Allies built offshore. The guide walks you through how it happened, not just where, so the geography makes sense as strategy.

The day covers Sword Beach, where British troops fought their way inland toward Bayeux, and Juno Beach, where Canadian forces came ashore and pushed deeper into Normandy. You'll see the British Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer overlooking part of Gold Beach, and stop at Pegasus Bridge (the first D-Day objective the airborne troops captured) with the Pegasus Memorial Museum there to explain how the bridge was taken. The tour ends at Ranville War Cemetery, where many of those airborne troops are buried, close to the bridge itself.

Private transportation means the pace is yours: no fixed group schedule, no waiting for others to board. The vehicle is air-conditioned and has WiFi on board. Your guide is live and speaks English or Dutch. Museum entry fees and lunch are not included, and the Juno Beach Centre has an optional entrance fee if you want to go inside.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Dutch.

What exactly is Pegasus Bridge and why does it matter on D-Day?

Pegasus Bridge was the first D-Day objective captured by British airborne troops, taken before dawn on June 6th to prevent German reinforcements from crossing the Orne River. The Pegasus Memorial Museum at the bridge tells the story of how it was taken and held.

Can I visit the museums and cemeteries, or do we just see them from outside?

The tour stops at Ranville War Cemetery where you walk among the graves. The Pegasus Memorial Museum is included as a stop. The Juno Beach Centre is optional with an entrance fee you pay separately if you choose to go inside.

How much walking is involved over the nine hours?

You walk at each beach and cemetery stop to see the landing sites and memorials, but the tour is built around private transport between locations, so you're not on your feet the entire day.

Does the tour include lunch or time to eat?

Lunch is not included. The nine-hour tour allows time to stop for a meal, but you arrange and pay for it yourself.

What's the difference between the British and Canadian beaches on this tour?

Sword Beach and Gold Beach were British landing zones. Juno Beach was where Canadian forces came ashore. The tour visits all three, so you see how the invasion spread across the coast and how each force moved inland from their landing point.
