The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when I saw the helmet hair situation in the mirror at Bayeux station. But our guide, Luc, just grinned and handed me these old-school goggles that made me look like a cartoon pilot. The first few minutes on the sidecar felt wobbly (I was convinced I’d tip over), but then we hit those tiny Normandy backroads and it was just… quiet fields, a bit of drizzle on my cheek, and Luc shouting stories over his shoulder as we rattled past cows that didn’t even blink at us.

We stopped in Arromanches first. I’d seen photos before but standing there, actually seeing what’s left of the Mulberry harbor — those huge concrete blocks half-sunk in the sea — it hit different. Luc pointed out where ships would’ve come in during D-Day. He told this story about his grandfather hiding bread for soldiers nearby; he kind of shrugged after, like it was nothing special. The wind smelled salty and cold, and you could hear gulls fighting over something behind us. My hands were freezing inside the gloves but I didn’t care.

Omaha Beach came next. It’s weird — there were kids playing with a soccer ball not far from where all that happened. Luc let us walk alone for a bit; he said “take your time.” I picked up a handful of wet sand just because… well, I don’t know why. The American Cemetery above is so quiet you almost whisper without meaning to. White crosses everywhere, grass so green it looks fake in photos. There was this older couple standing together by one grave; I still think about their faces sometimes.

On the way back we stopped at this cider farm (optional but honestly worth it). The lady pouring tastings laughed when I tried to pronounce “Calvados” correctly — pretty sure I butchered it. The cider tasted sharp and sweet at once, and the barn smelled like apples and rain-soaked wood. We rode home through Bayeux just as the cathedral bells started ringing — no idea if that was planned or just luck.
