The experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell: damp grass and a hint of engine oil as we climbed into the old sidecar outside the Bayeux Battle of Normandy Museum. Our guide, Antoine, handed me these retro goggles (I looked ridiculous but didn’t care) and told us to hold tight. The road out of Bayeux is all hedgerows and sleepy cows, and I kept thinking how strange it felt: riding these quiet lanes that once saw tanks and chaos. Antoine pointed out a battered milestone with a faded “Liberty Road” marker. He said his grandfather remembered the convoys rolling past here in ’44. That stuck with me for some reason.

We rumbled along until Omaha Beach came into view. Just open sand, gray sky, and the sound of waves that felt too soft for what happened here. Antoine stopped the bike so we could walk down to the water. He told us about a young GI who wrote home about missing his mother’s apple pie. I tried to imagine being nineteen and landing here under gunfire. It’s impossible, really. The wind picked up and whipped sand at my ankles. I just stood there for a minute, not sure what to say. It was quieter than I expected.

The Normandy American Cemetery sits above the beach: rows and rows of white crosses against green grass. We wandered between them while Antoine shared stories about some of the names. There was this odd moment where everything went silent except for distant gulls. I still think about that silence sometimes. On the way back, we passed Longues-sur-Mer, the bunkers half-swallowed by grass now, and Antoine let us climb inside one. Cold concrete walls, graffiti from other visitors, even a bit of moss growing in cracks. He laughed when my helmet nearly got stuck on the way out.
