The Experience

How do you understand what happened on June 6, 1944, without spending a full day driving between sites? This tour condenses the American D-Day story into four hours, moving between three carefully chosen locations in a minivan so you see the scale and the geography without the logistics. Your guide is an expert in Norman history and will walk you through the landings, the terrain and why each position mattered.

The tour starts at Pointe du Hoc, eight miles west of the cemetery, where the American Second Ranger Battalion under Lt. Col. James E. Rudder scaled 100-foot cliffs on June 6 to seize German artillery pieces that could have fired on the troops landing at Omaha and Utah beaches. The Rangers held the position against determined German counterattacks at a high cost of life. From there you move to Omaha Beach itself, where the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions came ashore. The beach was a real trap for those troops, and you'll stop at one or two points along the sand—Vierville, St Laurent or Colleville—depending on your preference and circumstances, to stand where the landings happened and understand the terrain the soldiers faced.

The final stop is the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, which covers 172.5 acres at the north end of a half-mile access road. The cemetery holds the graves of more than 9,380 military dead, most from the D-Day landings and the operations that followed. The Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side, carry 1,557 names. The minivan is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided, and the guide handles all the stops and the narrative so you can focus on what you're standing in front of.
