Six major sites in one day: what a private guide and a full itinerary unlock when you arrive at port

A private Alexandria tour picks you up from the port or your hotel with an Egyptologist guide and covers six major sites in 10 hours: the Bibliotheca (8 million books, site of the ancient lighthouse), the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (3rd-century blend of Greek, Roman and Egyptian art), the Graeco-Roman Museum, Saint Mark Cathedral (Egypt's first church), Abu El Abbas mosque (built 1775), and Pompey's Pillar. Entry fees are optional. Airport and airport hotel pickups add $10 per person.

The Experience

You get picked up holding a sign with your name, then driven in an air-conditioned vehicle to the Bibliotheca, the world's largest library now, built as a modern homage to the ancient lighthouse that once stood on this site: one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The guide walks you through the architecture and the collection, then takes photos from outside (the library closes Fridays). From there you move to the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, a 3rd-century burial site where Greek, Roman and Egyptian art styles blend together in the tombs and chambers underground.

The Graeco-Roman Museum comes next, where the guide points out the alabaster Good Shepherd in Room 1, architectural elements from early Christian buildings in Room 2, and a collection of silver and gold pieces in Room 3, including a silver torso of Aphrodite from the 2nd century and ancient jewelry. Saint Mark Cathedral follows, built on the site where St. Mark the Evangelist founded the first church in Egypt around AD 60. Abu El Abbas mosque, constructed in 1775 over the 13th-century mausoleum of a Spanish scholar who lived in Alexandria for 43 years, sits on Mosque Square overlooking the eastern harbor. You pass by Pompey's Pillar, the largest free-standing Roman column outside Rome and Constantinople, and take photos from outside.

The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages, and the vehicle is wheelchair accessible with all sites and surfaces adapted for mobility needs. The tour runs 10 hours total, and you're dropped at your hotel or port at the end. Lunch is not included, so plan a stop or bring something with you.
