The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Cairo hotel and a drive to Alexandria. Once there, the guide takes you first to the Library of Alexandria, where you'll see the exterior and learn how the building was designed. The library holds 8 million books and sits near the open court displaying statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy the First, recovered from underwater. The guide explains the history as you move through, with stops for photographs. Note that the library closes on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, and entry to the reading areas requires a separate ticket.

The core of the tour centers on two major sites. The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are the largest Roman cemetery in Egypt, carved three levels deep into the rock, and you walk through the chambers themselves. Afterward, the route takes you past Pompey's Pillar (built in the 4th century to honor Emperor Diocletian), and then to the Church of St. Mark, Africa's oldest church. You'll also see the Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the city's largest, and pass by the oldest funfair in Egypt.

The final stretch follows the corniche and old harbour, where traditional fishing boats and fishermen making nets create the kind of scene photographers seek out. The Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world) closes the tour with another photo stop. An air-conditioned car carries you throughout, and the guide is a qualified Egyptologist who can speak your language if English, Spanish, Italian or French is not your first choice.
