Museum, river, and market in one full day from the port

A full-day private tour departing from Alexandria port combines the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo with a Nile river cruise lunch and visits to Islamic Cairo's oldest mosques and Khan el-Khalili market. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at the port, handles all transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, and times your return to match your ship's departure. The tour runs eight to ten hours and includes the museum entry, open buffet lunch with entertainment, and all fees. You choose whether to add entry to the mosques and market time, or guide and transport alone.

The Experience

The day starts at Alexandria port, where your guide meets you holding a sign with your name. From there, the drive to Cairo takes you straight to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the world's largest archaeological museum, where you walk the Grand Staircase lined with colossal pharaoh statues and move through newly opened galleries. The King Tutankhamun treasures are the centerpiece: thousands of artifacts, many displayed for the first time with modern interactive displays. Your guide walks you through the collection and explains the history, art and culture behind what you're seeing.

After the museum, you head to the Nile for a river cruise that lasts two to three hours. The boat carries you along the water while you eat from an open buffet: fresh salads, tahini and hummus, grilled chicken or fish with rice and vegetables, traditional Egyptian dishes like koshary or stuffed vine leaves, and desserts including basbousa and konafa. Soft drinks, tea and coffee come with the meal. While you eat and relax on deck, the boat hosts live music, a belly dance performance, and a tanoura show (whirling dervish dancers in tall spinning skirts). You can photograph the Nile and the city from the open deck between courses.

If your option includes entry fees, the tour also covers Khan el-Khalili, the 600-year-old market in Islamic Cairo where you can shop for lanterns, jewelry, perfumes and scarves, or sit in a traditional café like El Fishawy for tea. You'll also visit Al-Azhar Mosque, built in 970 AD and part of the world's oldest Islamic university, where you can walk the marble courtyard and photograph the design; and the nearby Al-Hussein Mosque, one of Egypt's holiest sites. Your guide escorts you back to Alexandria port in time for your ship's departure.

What exactly is inside the Grand Egyptian Museum that makes it worth the drive from Alexandria?

The Grand Egyptian Museum holds the treasures of King Tutankhamun: thousands of artifacts, many on display for the first time, shown with modern interactive displays. The museum is the world's largest archaeological museum, and your guide walks you through the newly opened galleries and explains the history and meaning of what you see.

Will I have time to walk around Khan el-Khalili market and the mosques?

Khan el-Khalili and the two mosques are included only if you choose the option with entry fees and guide plus lunch. If you pick that option, your guide takes you through the 600-year-old market and both Al-Azhar and Al-Hussein mosques as part of the full day.

How does pickup and return work when I'm staying on a cruise ship in Alexandria?

Your guide meets you at Alexandria port holding a sign with your name, then drives you in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Cairo. At the end of the day, the guide escorts you back to Alexandria port in time for your ship's departure.
