- See Australian war memorial
- Tour German soldiers' fortress
The experience
What draws most travelers to El Alamein is the scale of the WWII battle itself (one of the turning points in North Africa), and this tour puts you inside three separate sites that tell that story. The museum holds the tanks, weapons, vehicles and personal accounts of the fighting; the Commonwealth cemetery is the final resting place for soldiers from Britain, Australia, Greece and India; and the German Fortress, a short distance away, is where German soldiers who died in the battle are buried. Your guide, a licensed Egyptologist, walks you through each site and explains the figures and events that shaped the campaign, including Rommel's role in the battle.
The tour leaves from your residence in Alexandria in an air-conditioned vehicle and returns the same way, so you don't arrange separate transport. The day runs 6 to 7 hours total. Lunch is not included in the price, so you'll either bring food or eat at a nearby option during a break. The guide is flexible about adjusting the itinerary if you want to spend more time at one site or less at another, and they're also a photographer if you want help capturing the cemetery and monuments.
