The Experience

“If you’re lucky, the sea will be calm enough to hear your own heartbeat,” our skipper Luka grinned as we left Dubrovnik’s harbor. He was right. The hum of the engine faded behind us and suddenly it was just wind, salt, and this weirdly peaceful feeling—like the Adriatic had pressed pause for a minute. I’d read about the Elafiti Islands but didn’t expect them to look so green up close. There was this smell—pine needles and something floral I couldn’t place—floating over from Koločep as we slowed near the first cave.

Luka handed me a snorkel mask and said, “Don’t worry, everyone looks silly in these.” He wasn’t wrong; my friend Anna’s laughter echoed off the rocks when I tried mine on backwards. The Blue Cave really is that color—sunlight slipping through underwater cracks made everything glow electric blue beneath us. It felt colder than I thought it would (I yelped), but floating there with tiny fish darting around my feet was worth it.
