The Experience
The first thing that hit me wasn’t the view—it was the slap of salty air as we sped out from Dubrovnik’s harbor. Our skipper, Luka, grinned like he knew exactly what we needed after a sticky morning in town. He handed us cold bottles of water (and later, something stronger), and I just remember thinking how good it felt to be moving—sea spray everywhere, hair wild, sun already warming up my shoulders.
I’d seen photos of the Blue Cave before but standing at its mouth, I didn’t expect the quiet. The engine cut out and suddenly it was just us and this weird blue glow bouncing off the limestone. Luka tossed out snorkels—my mask fogged up instantly—and told us where to swim so we’d catch the best light. I tried not to think about what might be brushing past my legs (he laughed when I asked if there were jellyfish—“Only friendly ones,” he said). The water tasted sharp and cold. I still think about that color under the surface.
We stopped at Sveti Jakov Beach for a while—there were only a few locals around, one old guy with a radio playing something tinny and cheerful. The sand here isn’t really sand; it’s more like tiny pebbles that stick between your toes. We sipped something sweet Luka poured from a battered flask (he called it “Croatian medicine”—not sure what was in it) and watched kids jump off rocks like they had no fear at all. There was no rush; Luka let us decide when to move on.
The Elafiti Islands came next—Koločep or maybe Lopud? I lost track after a while because everything blurred into green hills and white stone houses. At one point we drifted close enough to see grapevines climbing over someone’s garden wall. There was free wifi on board but honestly I forgot about my phone until we headed back toward Dubrovnik, sunburnt and salty and kind of wishing we could stay out there longer.
