The Experience

Someone hands me a cold bottle of water just as I’m still figuring out how to sit on these ridiculously soft cushions — turns out, luxury feels a bit like sinking into a cloud while the boat hums away from Dubrovnik’s harbor. Our skipper, Luka, is already grinning at my clumsy attempt to balance my sunglasses and camera. He points ahead: “First stop—Koločep for the Blue Cave.” I can smell salt in the air and something else, maybe sunscreen or the faint tang of engine oil. It’s not glamorous but somehow it fits.

The speed picks up and suddenly we’re slicing through this wild blue. The Elafiti Islands pop up one after another, green against all that sea. When we reach the caves on Koločep Island, Luka tosses us snorkels (they actually fit my weirdly-shaped head—bonus), and tells us to follow the light. Inside, everything glows blue under the sunbeams sneaking through cracks above. My friend tries to say “wow” underwater but it comes out as bubbles. I laugh so hard I choke on seawater—totally worth it. This private speedboat tour Dubrovnik thing is already nothing like what I expected; it’s quieter in here than I thought it’d be.

Lunch happens on Šipan Island—Luka recommends grilled fish at this place where the waiter barely looks up from his crossword but brings bread that tastes like someone’s grandma made it. We’re sandy and a little sunburnt by now but nobody cares. Later we wander Lopud’s little streets; there’s a church bell ringing somewhere and kids chasing each other barefoot past old stone walls. I try to order coffee in Croatian (fail) and get an espresso anyway.

We end up at Šunj Beach, which is apparently famous around here—not sure if it’s for the sand or just the lazy vibe at the beach bar where everyone seems to know each other. There’s time for one last swim before heading back toward Dubrovnik, hair full of salt and skin sticky with sunscreen. The sun is lower now and everything looks softer somehow; I still think about that blue glow in the cave sometimes when things get too loud back home.
