The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers on a speedboat. The morning started in Dubrovnik’s port — not as busy as I thought it’d be — and our skipper, Marko, had that easy Croatian warmth. He handed us cold sodas straight from the fridge (I’m still grateful for that), then we zipped out toward the Elaphiti Islands. The sea was glassy and blue but not in a postcard way — more like you could smell salt and something herbal on the wind. Twenty minutes later we pulled up at the Blue Cave. Marko grinned and said “Go on, it’s colder than you think.” He wasn’t wrong.

I’ve snorkeled before but never inside a cave where sunlight turns water into this weird electric color. My mask kept fogging up so I just floated for a minute, listening to everyone’s voices echoing off stone. After that we hit these three smaller caves — all connected — and I lost track of time just drifting between them. There was this moment when I surfaced and realized how quiet it was except for someone laughing on another boat nearby. Felt oddly peaceful.

Later we stopped at what Marko called “the best sandy beach near Dubrovnik” (he’s probably right). The sand was soft, shallow enough for kids splashing around, and there were little bars tucked under pine trees selling grilled fish — smelled amazing but I went for coffee instead because old habits die hard. We wandered through a fishing village on Šipan island too; an old man waved at us from his garden like he knew everyone who passed by. The tour included everything — snorkeling gear, drinks, even some local wine if you wanted it — which made things feel easy.

On the way back, sunburned and salty, I caught myself thinking about how different the light looked over Dubrovnik from the water. Not sure why that sticks with me but it does.
