The Experience

“You see that shimmer? That’s not a filter — it’s real,” our skipper Luka grinned as we drifted up to the Blue Cave off Kolocep. He was right. It was early, the water glassy and cold against my toes, and I felt a weird mix of nerves and excitement before slipping in. The cave swallowed us in blue light — not bright, more like someone turned down the world outside. I could hear the echo of my own splash. Someone behind me laughed, maybe from relief or just because it was so strange to be floating in a place that glowed like that.

We didn’t stay long (maybe 40 minutes?), but it was enough. Luka handed out snorkels for the next stop — three smaller green caves, still on Kolocep. The sea here looked almost fake, greenish and clear enough to spot little silver fish darting around rocks. I tried to say “thank you” in Croatian when Luka pointed out a starfish, but he just smiled and said, “No worries, English is fine.” The salt stung my lips but I barely noticed; too busy watching sunlight flicker underwater.
