The Experience

The boat leaves Dubrovnik harbor and heads straight for Koločep, where you drop anchor near the Blue Cave and the Three Caves. Snorkeling gear is already on board — masks, fins, everything — so you just put it on and go in. The water is clear enough that you see the cave ceiling from underneath, and if you don't want to snorkel, you can float on the deck with a drink and watch the limestone walls. Because it's a private tour, you stay as long as you want at each stop, which means no rushing back to the boat because a group schedule says so.

Lopud comes next, and that's where Šunj beach is — one of the few real sandy beaches on the Croatian Adriatic, which matters if you've spent the last two days on rocky coves. The beach has a sea swing, a couple of bars, and enough space that you're not packed in with a hundred other tourists. You can swim, sit under an umbrella, or walk into the village behind it, where there's a monastery and an old arboretum if you feel like stretching your legs. Lunch is optional; a few restaurants sit right on the water, or you bring food from Dubrovnik. The boat waits.

Šipan is the third island, and whether you stop there depends on how long you've lingered on the first two. If time allows, you can visit Sudurad village or snorkel in the Green Cave. Either way, the day moves at your pace, not a fixed itinerary. WiFi works on the boat, so if you need to check in or send a photo, it's there. Water, wine, beer and soft drinks are included, which saves you buying rounds at beach bars. The boat has a sundeck with music, so the return to Dubrovnik doesn't feel like the day ended — it feels like it's still going.
