The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to have the Elafiti Islands pretty much to yourself? We met our skipper at Lapadska obala just before 8:30 (I was still clutching my coffee), and honestly, I didn’t expect the water to be so glassy that early. There was this salty breeze as we zipped out of Dubrovnik — you could see the old city shrinking behind us, but somehow it felt like we were sneaking away before anyone else woke up. Our guide, Luka, grinned when he handed me a snorkel mask and said, “Blue Cave first. Trust me.” I did.

The Blue Cave on Kolocep is… well, it’s not something you can really photograph right. The light comes in sideways and everything goes this weird electric blue under the surface — even your hands look unreal. I tried diving down but mostly just floated there, half-laughing into my snorkel. Luka tossed us some stories about local fishermen dodging storms here; I’m not sure if he was joking but it made me notice how quiet it gets inside those rocks. After that, we hit a couple smaller caves (if the sea’s calm — it was for us), each with its own shade of green or turquoise. At one point I got tangled up trying to say “Koločep” correctly; Luka just shook his head and laughed.

By the time we reached Sunj Beach on Lopud Island, my skin tasted like salt and sunscreen. The sand there is finer than I expected — almost powdery? There’s a bar tucked in the trees where we grabbed cold white wine (included for adults) and just sat around watching a few locals set up umbrellas for the day. It wasn’t crowded at all yet; maybe that’s why it felt so easy to just let time drift. I still think about floating in that blue-green water with nowhere else to be.
