The Experience

You know that sound when a boat engine slows down and everything else gets louder — waves tapping the hull, someone laughing behind you? That’s how our Dubrovnik Blue Cave tour started, pulling away from the Old Town harbor. The city walls looked softer from the water than I expected. Our guide Luka pointed out Lokrum Island on the left — he said locals go there to swim when they want quiet. The salt air mixed with sunscreen and a bit of diesel; not glamorous but honest.

We reached Koločep pretty quick, maybe 30 minutes? The Blue Cave was smaller than I’d pictured but way more blue — like someone dropped food coloring in the water. Luka tossed us masks and I hesitated (not my best swimming day) but he grinned and said “Just float.” Inside it was cool and echoey; you could hear your own breathing. I tried to say “lijepo” (beautiful) but probably butchered it. Some tiny silver fish zipped past my hand. We swam over to the Green Caves after — greener light there, almost mossy.
