The experience

The tour starts with smaller caves on Koločep Island, where your skipper points out grottos too narrow or shallow to enter but worth seeing for the stories behind them. Then comes the Blue Cave, where sunlight reflecting off the water turns the sea an intense blue that pulls people toward the edge to jump in. The three Green Caves follow, their turquoise and green hues shifting as waves move across the surface. These are the main swimming and snorkeling stops, and the skipper brings a GoPro camera so you can capture the moment without your own equipment.

Lopud Island is next, a car-free place that once held two monasteries and thirty churches. What remains are stone ruins scattered across the island and two large sandy beaches. You can arrange lunch at a local restaurant serving fresh-caught fish if you want to stay longer, or keep moving. On the return toward Dubrovnik's Old Town, the boat stops at Betina Cave, where a pebbly beach sits inside a sea-facing grotto cool enough in the afternoon to escape the heat. The final stop is the Pigeon's Cave on Lokrum Island's outer edge: the largest of the seven, with steep rocks and Mediterranean plants framing its entrance, shaped over thousands of years by waves hitting the stone.

Swimming, snorkeling and cliff jumping happen at multiple stops. The skipper speaks English and knows the caves well enough to read the conditions and adjust where you spend time. Snorkeling gear, life jackets, towels and drinks (beer, wine, water and soft drinks) come with the tour. A fuel surcharge of €80 is paid in cash on the boat.
