Rainforest sloth walk with Costa Rican coffee and chocolate tasting

You’ll wander La Fortuna’s rainforest trails at sloth pace with a local guide, spotting wildlife up close before tasting fresh Costa Rican coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane on a working farm. Expect laughter over new flavors and stories shared under shelter if rain comes — this day’s about slowing down and soaking up real moments.

3h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Walk rainforest trails for 1.5-2 hours
  • Observe two and three-toed sloths
  • See poisonous frogs, snakes, and birds
  • Visit second park section for tasting
  • Taste chocolate, coffee, and sugar cane
  • Learn from tour guides about plants
  • Visit farm with medicinal plants
  • Taste beverages from different plants

The Experience

The first thing I noticed at Sloth Park near La Fortuna was the hush — not silent, but that thick green quiet you get when the air is heavy and everything’s just waiting. Our guide, Esteban, pointed out a two-toed sloth curled up so high I almost missed it (he laughed when I squinted forever). The trail was muddy in places — not tough, just enough to remind me I was actually in a rainforest. We stopped every few minutes for frogs or birds. There was this one tiny blue frog that looked fake until it hopped away.

After about an hour and a half of slow walking (Esteban called it “sloth speed”), we made our way to the farm section. The smell hit first — roasted coffee beans and something sweet underneath. They handed us little cups of fresh sugar cane juice, which tasted grassy but good, and I tried grinding cacao by hand (way harder than it looks on Instagram). There were medicinal plants everywhere; someone in our group tried to pronounce “guarumo” and got a round of giggles from the staff.

Tasting the chocolate right there — still warm from the process — was honestly my favorite part. It melted weirdly fast in my hand because of the humidity. We sipped some strong coffee while Esteban explained how his family started growing here decades ago. It wasn’t rushed at all; we just hung out under a tin roof while rain started tapping overhead. Even now, sometimes if I catch that earthy smell after rain, I think about that afternoon.
