The experience

We met our guide just outside Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, and I could already hear the birds, not just chirping, but these strange whistles and clicks that made me stop mid-step. Our group was tiny, just six of us, which felt right for this kind of thing. The air was sticky but fresh, like it had just rained (it probably had, it’s Costa Rica). As soon as we got onto the first bridge, our guide José pointed out a flash of blue: motmot, he said. I’d never even heard of that bird before.

I’ll admit I was nervous about the heights (those hanging bridges sway more than you’d think), but after a few minutes, I forgot about my legs and started watching José scan the canopy with his battered binoculars. He could imitate some calls too. Once he did this low trill and suddenly a whole flock answered back from somewhere deeper in the green. We stopped every few meters to listen or look up at something rustling above us. Sometimes it was just leaves, sometimes a toucan (I almost missed it because I was distracted by these weird orange mushrooms growing on a log).

There were moments when everything went quiet except for distant thunder and the sound of our feet on metal mesh. I tried to count how many different bird calls I could hear at once: gave up after five or six. José laughed when I asked if he ever gets tired of this place. He said every day is different here, with over 450 species passing through Mistico Park’s forest corridors. That stuck with me for some reason.

I still think about that one hummingbird hovering right in front of my face: its wings sounded like buzzing wires and for a second it felt like time slowed down. The tour wasn’t rushed at all. We took our time crossing each bridge, sharing water and swapping stories about birds we’d seen back home (none as colorful as here). And yeah, my photos are mostly blurry, those birds move fast, but honestly, being there was better than any picture.
