Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Birdwatching at Arenal Volcano

  • Birdwatching tour with guide and driver

The air was cool and a bit damp when we set out early—one of those mornings where you can hear the distant calls before you even see the trees. Our guide, Luis, handed me the telescope and pointed out a flash of color in the canopy. Turns out, it was a Keel-billed Toucan, just munching away on some fruit. I’d only seen those in books before.

We moved slowly along the trails at Mundo Aventura Natural Park, eyes peeled for movement. Every so often, Luis would stop and whisper something about a clay-colored thrush or a motmot hiding nearby. The group stayed small—just six of us—so it never felt crowded. At one point, we caught sight of a tiny hummingbird hovering over wildflowers; its wings made this soft buzzing sound that almost blended with the morning breeze.

Yes! The guide explains everything clearly and helps you use the telescope. No experience needed—just curiosity.
Are children allowed on this tour?
Kids are welcome if they’re over 4 years old and with two paying adults. It’s not recommended for younger children due to the length and quiet needed.
