The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to walk through clouds, or at least above the trees? That was my first thought as we stepped onto the first of the hanging bridges in Arenal. The air was thick—sort of sweet, almost like wet earth and green leaves after rain. Our guide, Diego, grinned when he saw me hesitate. “Don’t worry,” he said, “the bridges move a little, but that’s part of the fun.” He wasn’t wrong. The first few steps felt wobbly but then you get this weird rush—like you’re floating between layers of forest you usually only see from below.

I kept expecting to just see trees, but Diego had this way of spotting things I’d never notice. He stopped us under one bridge and pointed out a tiny red frog clinging to a leaf—honestly, I would’ve missed it completely. There was this moment where we all just stood quietly because up in the canopy everything sounds different. You hear birds calling from somewhere above your head and sometimes branches creak in the wind. We crossed fifteen bridges altogether, some high enough that you can see straight across the treetops and down into these deep green valleys. At one point Diego handed us some local fruit as a snack (tasted kind of like guava?) and told us how the reserve protects over 600 acres of forest. I liked that he knew all these plant names in both Spanish and English—he even tried teaching us one but I definitely butchered the pronunciation.

By the end my shoes were muddy and my hair smelled like rain and leaves—a good thing, honestly. There’s something about being up there that makes you feel small in a good way. I still think about that view from the highest bridge; it didn’t look real for a second, more like someone painted it just for us.
