The Experience

We eased ourselves into the raft just after sunrise, shoes still damp from yesterday’s rain. The Peñas Blancas River was quieter than I expected — not silent, but that kind of hush where you hear everything else: a heron’s wings flapping low over the water, leaves brushing against each other overhead. Our guide, Mario, gave us a quick nod before pushing off. He barely used the paddle at first, just steering us around half-submerged logs while pointing out shapes in the shadows. I’m still not sure how he spotted that first sloth — it looked like a bundle of moss to me.

The air smelled green (if that makes sense), like wet bark and something sweet I couldn’t place. Every so often Mario would pause mid-sentence to listen — once it was howler monkeys in the distance, another time he grinned and whispered “basilisk lizard” as we watched this little guy literally run across the water. I tried to get a photo but mostly ended up with blurry leaves and my own thumb in the corner. There wasn’t much talking between us for stretches; it felt right to just drift and watch iguanas sunning themselves or turtles sliding off rocks as we floated by.

I didn’t expect to feel so calm — maybe it was the steady movement or the way sunlight filtered through all those tangled branches overhead, making patterns on our arms. At one point Mario handed out some fruit (pineapple? mango? I never asked) and told us about ficus trees and why kapok wood is sacred here. Li laughed when I tried to repeat a bird name in Spanish — probably butchered it. I think about that quiet sometimes now when things get noisy back home.
