The experience

“Is that a monkey or just my imagination?” I asked, squinting through the green tangle along the Rio Frio. Our guide, José, just grinned and pointed: sure enough, a little capuchin tail flicked above the branches. The drive from La Fortuna to Caño Negro had already surprised me. Papaya fields stretching out under this hazy morning light, and José naming every crop like he was showing off his own backyard. I tried to pronounce “yucca” the way he did (failed), but he didn’t seem to mind.

We stopped at El Caiman restaurant first. I can still remember the smell of coffee mixing with something sweet and fried (plantains maybe?). There was a quiet hum in the air, locals chatting softly while we sipped our welcome drink. Then onto the boat: slow-moving, easy pace, nothing rushed. The water looked almost black in places, reflecting tangled trees overhead. Egrets everywhere. One glided so close I could see its yellow feet curled around a branch.
