The Experience

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about kayaking in Costa Rica — mostly because I’m not exactly “outdoorsy” and the word “safari” made me picture something wild. But the Peñas Blancas River is just fifteen minutes from La Fortuna, and it’s more peaceful than I’d expected. Our guide, Diego, met us right at the hotel (which was nice because I never know if I’m waiting in the right spot), and he had this quiet way of pointing things out — like howler monkeys up in the trees, or that lizard they call “Jesus Christ” because it actually runs across water. No one believed it until we saw one darting over a log. Still makes me laugh thinking about it.

The river itself felt slow and gentle, almost glassy in places except for when a breeze would ruffle everything up. We drifted past these tangled roots and bright birds — toucans, maybe? — but honestly, I was so caught up in watching a sloth move (so slowly you’d miss it if you blinked) that I forgot to ask Diego half my questions. He didn’t mind though; he just let us float quietly sometimes, listening to frogs or whatever that weird croaking sound was. There was this earthy smell too — kind of sweet but also damp, like rain on leaves even though it hadn’t rained yet.

Afterward we ended up at Tita Yolanda’s place. She waved us in with hands dusted in flour and showed us her garden — coffee plants, sugar cane, cacao pods hanging low. She let us taste this thick chocolate drink (I probably made a face; it’s nothing like Swiss Miss) and some little snacks she’d made fresh. It felt less like a tour and more like dropping by someone’s house for lunch. The whole thing was slower than I’m used to traveling, which is probably why I remember it so clearly now.
