Lake Arenal kayaking tour: women-led, personalized experience
Monkeys and macaws show up on the water, not in a zoo enclosure.
A women-led kayaking activity on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake, where you paddle 6 kilometers in calm waters with a certified guide and spot wildlife including howler monkeys, toucans and herons. Hotel pickup is included, and the experience runs 4 hours from start to finish. The tour is personalized—you set the pace and can bring a pet if you arrange a life vest in advance.
Step-by-step itinerary
Kayaking on Lake Arenal
- Pick up at hotel or Airbnb
- Drive 45 minutes to El Castillo
- Receive gear and safety instructions
- Paddle 6 kilometers on Lake Arenal
- Spot monkeys and various birds
- Enjoy Costa Rican fresh fruit and drinks
The Experience
The day starts with pickup at your hotel or Airbnb, then a 45-minute drive to El Castillo, where the put-in point sits with views of the Arenal Volcano's dry side and Cerro Chato rising behind it. Once there, the certified staff rig the gear, walk you through safety, and hand you water before you launch. The lake itself—85 square kilometers across, 30 to 60 meters deep depending on the season—stays calm enough that paddling feels steady, not strenuous.
You paddle 6 kilometers roundtrip over roughly 2 hours on the water. The guide knows where the wildlife congregates: howler monkeys calling from the trees, toucans and red macaws in the canopy, tiger herons and great egrets working the shallows, and the snake-head bird (anhinga) diving for fish. The pace is yours to set—this is personalized, so the guide adjusts to what you want to see and how long you want to linger. If you have a dog, you can bring it along in a pet life vest (available for an additional fee).
After you pull the kayak ashore, fresh Costa Rican fruit and drinks wait for you. The whole outing—drive, safety briefing, paddle, wildlife, snacks—takes 4 hours. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the air-conditioned vehicle means the ride out and back doesn't drain you before or after the water.

Is this one for you?The pickup from your hotel and the 45-minute drive settle the logistics if you don't have a car or aren't staying near the lake—you show up, get collected, and the guide handles the route and the paddle. The personalized pace means you're not locked into a group schedule, so you can linger when monkeys appear or move on if the water gets choppy.
