If you want to see Costa Rica beyond the usual tourist spots, this mountain bike tour around Lake Arenal is for you. You’ll pedal quiet country roads with local guides who know every shortcut and story. Expect real countryside scenes, volcano views, and plenty of fresh air.
You know that earthy smell after a quick rain? That’s what hit us as we rolled out onto the backroads near Lake Arenal. The bikes were ready—nothing fancy, but solid—and our guide, Diego, made sure everyone was set before we left the gravel lot. We started off easy, passing a couple of sleepy cows and a tiny roadside stand selling homemade cheese (Diego said it’s best on fresh bread). The first hill was no joke, but you get these little breezes off the lake that help cool you down.
The trail wound through open fields and patches of forest where you could hear toucans somewhere up in the canopy. At one point, we stopped by a narrow bridge to watch a group of kids fishing with string lines—no rods, just patience. The volcano loomed in the distance, sometimes hiding behind clouds. Diego pointed out how the old lava flows shaped the land here. We crossed a shallow stream (my shoes got soaked, but honestly, it felt good) and took a break for pineapple slices under a big guanacaste tree. By late morning, the sun was out strong—bring sunscreen!—but most of the ride had shade from tall trees or hedges lining the farms.
Yes! The guides adjust the pace and route based on your comfort level. Some hills are challenging but there are plenty of breaks.
Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting muddy, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and maybe a small camera or phone for photos.
Absolutely—all equipment is included and checked before we start. Helmets are required for everyone.
Your spot includes use of a mountain bike and helmet, bottled water to keep you hydrated, fresh tropical fruits during breaks (the pineapple is especially sweet here), plus transport in an air-conditioned van to and from the starting point.
