The Experience

You board a raft boat and spend approximately 2 hours floating downriver, then another hour or so drifting back or exploring a different section—the exact route depends on where the animals are that day. The river itself is the route: kapoks, figs and rubber trees line the banks, and their branches and root systems are where most of the wildlife lives. Sloths hang in the canopy, monkeys move through the high branches, iguanas bask on logs, and birds work the water's edge. Your guide knows where to look and what to listen for, calling out animals as they appear or move.

Midway through the float, the boat pulls over for a stop where you get tropical fruits and drinks—a break to rest and take in the sounds of the forest without the motion of the water. The whole outing, including the drive to and from your hotel, runs about 4 hours. You'll wear a life jacket the entire time on the water, and the boat is designed to keep you stable and low enough to see into the vegetation without tipping.
